Boarding Up A Window

Adventure Location:  Del Rio, Texas
Rolling Date: Feb. 1, 2013
The Teams cannot call it an adventure. Of course the COLD and Windy day tended to keep the OFM inside. All was not lost because he did come up with an idea for the large window by the table to hold back some of the heat and COLD.

Using ¾” polyfoam in the past has left little beads scattered all over the window area each time we installed or removed the foam. After an hour over at Home Depot perusing the foam sheets offered and thinking until their smoke alarms sounded off, the Teams chose to try another way.

Across the highway we went to Wal-Mart. After touring the store a few times we had two ideas. One was to use an insulated curtain to close off the window. However mounting the curtain did not fit in well with the existing window treatments.  It was time to consider idea two.

The foam filled poster board could be cut to fit the small ledge of the window frame with an interference fit.  The thin foam would help slow the temperature migration in/out of the Castle. Plus the three cut to fit boards would be easy to store when not in use. This was done and tonight it is supposed to test the solution with 29°F temperatures.

At the time of this writing, 2125, it seems to be doing adequate. The ¾” foam was better but way to messy. Some more adjusting may be required to finish the job, but it seems to be the correct direction to head.

The good rain of a few days ago may make the cacti break out in blooms this year. There are a lot of cacti available to bloom in this area. After tomorrow the area is supposed to start a warming trend. If the cacti explode in bloom, you know what to expect for pictures don’t you. Chasing beautiful blooms in the desert is a great way of trying to have tooooo much fun. TheOFM.

  1. The photo is fantastic !!!!! It has a silver hue that is so calming .... Great job with that one...... One of my sisters is having an insulation problem with a couple windows ......I'll pass your findings on to her.... Hope things warm up real soon ..... You could almost use a heat wave !!!!!!

  2. I used that board to fill in the sky light in my trailer. Even though it had a shade on it the sun was baking the interior of the trailer. That worked like a charm.

  5. At WalMart they have blue closed cell pads for camping. You could cut that to fit (they are about 3'x6' or so) and use something to make them a bit more rigid if needed. No mess since they are closed foam. Also at least as good at insulating.

  6. try Dow Blue Board instead of white styrofoam....no beads, but a little more pricey. Several thicknesses to choose from at Lowes. Better R-value per inch too.

    IMHO...Bigfoot

  7. Barney, get yourself some 15mm Tuff-R and stainless steel tape for the cut edges. It's poly-isocyanurate foam between two sheets of foil. Seal the edges with the tape and you have almost the same R value as the wall.

    1. Another good idea, however it will take at least 28mm Tuff-R to equal the R value of the Castles walls. The Castle has walls of over R-7 according to the trailer specs.

  8. Hi Barney, First time here. If you paint the styrofoam sheet with a latex wall paint, it could help contain the beads. My frugal uncle used to paint styrofoam coolers and they would last for years. Good luck with your project. Linda
